Ever wondered why as soon as you become a parent you catch yourself saying the things your parents said to you but you swore you would never say to your kids? Why you always seem to attract the wrong partner? Why that weight always seems to come back? Why nobody ever seems to appreciate you?

And why no matter how hard you try to be, act or think differently it rarely lasts?

The answer is actually simple, perhaps confronting, but simple. Approximately ninety five percent of your thoughts and actions come from the programming you received from others. The child that we all were, and the adult we have become, was shaped by all those who were our elders, mentors, teachers, parents and peers in our formative years.

Modern neuroscientists have shown that somewhere between ninety and ninety five percent of our thoughts, actions and reactions originate in our subconscious mind and the majority of our subconscious programming was completed by the time we turned eight.

Let’s explore that a little. While you are reading this you are probably fairly focussed on it. Your conscious mind is reading and deciphering it. However if you are reading this while eating your lunch in your favourite café you likely are still eating or drinking. You are able to pick up your cup and find your lips, drink just enough and swallow whilst putting down the cup. Sounds easy doesn’t it? Now watch a four year old do it. They can’t. To be able to drink from a cup without an accident they need to focus the conscious mind on it. You have programmed the subconscious to take over when the conscious mind is otherwise occupied. In this case you programmed it with repetition. Between the age of approximately eighteen months and seven to eight years your brain predominately operates at the alpha brain wave level. This is the level where the subconscious is wide open to be built. We were designed this way. We learnt about danger. ‘That’s a lion: run!’. Or in more modern times, “’That’s a stranger: avoid!’. Likewise if the elders who looked after you were kind and patient, and they encouraged you to try again, not to give up, you would be programmed with resilience. If they hugged and kissed you, and focussed time and attention on you, they programmed you to know you were loved.

Somewhere around the age of eight our brain develops and we leave the realms of alpha and spend most of our waking hours in a beta brain wave state. The subconscious is effectively locked. It steps in constantly and takes over when the conscious mind is otherwise occupied, which as we have seen is around ninety percent of the time. But it is no longer easily changed. If by this time we are scared of the dark it requires real skill and effort to change this. We know consciously the dark isn’t scary, but we believe it is on a much deeper level. If as a child we were told we were an idiot either regularly or by somebody we believed was in a position of authority or knowing, then we probably believe, deep down, that we are an idiot. Or much worse.

So think about the diversity of people that you were raised by because it is the beliefs and behaviour of these people that you now default to the majority of the time.

It’s time to stop beating yourself up for your behaviour, and the recurring patterns in your life, and realise they are programs in your subconscious that you are living out. It’s time to look to what you can do to change the limiting programs and beliefs you are living by at the level of the subconscious. By the way, neuroscience suggests that seventy percent of all our subconscious program is limiting or holding us back in some way.

Just thinking and repeating positive ideas will not change the subconscious. We need to actually change the program at its source, not just place a band-aid over the top. There are a number of different therapies that work on the subconscious, such as hypnotherapy, kinesiology and other therapies that access the alpha brainwave state.

The key is being able to access the felt sense of the limiting belief, and rewrite the program from there.

I believe the weather forecast is the most interesting program that comes on our TV screens. It helps us in planning when a cyclone approaches, gives us an idea on how and where rain will be falling soon, how plants and crops will potentially grow, etc. In other words, how survival is looking ahead.

Feng is symbolically translated by Air & Wind, in Shui expressing Water & Rain… how can we contextualise this in our daily lives, in our homes? When we look at a satellite view of Wind (Feng) we see it swirls, curls; sometimes rapidly. When we check the precipitations (Shui), rain washes some areas, feeds vegetation, fills rivers, erodes lands, reshapes landscapes.

Let’s take a satellite view of each of our homes and let’s open our imagination to how the energy of Wind and Water are flowing in our surroundings? Oh no, I need to re-word this… from the satellite you won’t be seeing all the details because you won’t be zooming too close to avoid looking at some of your clutter. Let’s say, we are going to look at your home from above, a bit closer, from a bird’s eye point of view.

You are the bird, flying above your home, there is no roof and you look at the inside of the place. You can see how the Wind (Feng) is flowing, which door, which window can open and bring fresh air inside the place. Where (Feng) Wind can’t go, there is a block – could be where a pile of clutter is hiding in a corner, a door that never opens.

You then look where Water (Shui) flows, from bathroom, laundry and kitchen taps, escaping through the drains. But Water is also when you wash your floors, making your home clean and renewing its inner energies. Water is part of washing your curtains, your bedding, your bodies, your hair, your teeth. Water purifies.

feng-shui-mapWith both Feng and Shui in mind, now place an imaginary 9 square grid (See Magic Square in Fig 1) onto your premises and, like that little bird looking from above, where is Wind (Feng) or Water (Shui) challenged? You keep your toilet seat open all the time? Your flow will escape through this open mouth, so will your opportunities in life.

You never use your front door and come in through the laundry? You bring in the flow of stagnant dirty wash inside the place.

Your home symbolises your life: look at the bigger picture. Today is the result of choices and decisions you made until now. Tomorrow will be what you decide to change right now. Altering the Chi flow inside your home and it will affect the Chi flow of your mind.

Look at the bigger picture… Where do you see yourself in 3 months time, in 6 months, in a year? Uplift the energies in the area of the Magic Square where you need a ‘push’ by de-cluttering and adding photos and posters of your dreams and they will soon come true. Life has many seasons, you make them change.
